The Maze

The children's maze was made in memory of BWT's first Membership Secretary, Frank Manning.

Here is Frank (R) in 2008 with Jeff Winn and Chris Street in the BWT stall at Bearsted Fayre.

Frank joined the BWT management team in 2004, orginally as Membership Secretary, then took over Sponsorship at its busiest time, and worked hard for our success in People's Millions Competition. He was a dedicated team member always working in the background not seeking any publicity. He also played and coached other players at Squash, was Chairman of Mote Squash Club for 12 years, a member of Bearsted Golf Club and Bearsted Bowls Club.  He died in November 2008 aged 66, sadly missed.

On Saturday 20th June 2009 more than sixty people turned out to dig out the maze pattern, with spades, forks and wheelbarrows! Over eleven cubic yards of soil were excavated, and it was hard and difficult digging.  Everyone was very grateful for the refreshments provided by Ann Manning!    The surface was finished later. Here, on 7th July, Richard Ashness is compacting the surface of the paths as a smaller group finished the job on the second day.

Children enjoy it ... and remember it!  Bertie Cartmell aged 4 ¾, a visitor from Devon, drew it a few days after his visit! (below, label by Mum).
